Hello Everyone,

Good work this week. We had a lot to get through this week but you were able to take it in stride. This week we finished off chapter 1 and started to explore chapter 2. We saw the importance of trade, economy and looked at the events of the crusades. Overall we have looked at some of the foundation of the Renaissance and laid the ground work of understanding how and why changes are going to happen. We looked a little bit at monasteries and how they created manuscripts. We saw the importance of contact with a much more advanced Muslim civilization and what the Europeans learned from them. We looked at calligraphy and how much time and effort goes into making very deliberate texts. You also were assigned your calligraphy project that consists of writing one word on a piece of paper. The purpose of this is to get repeated feedback on how to improve, to apply design thinking and get used to the process of reflecting and improving rather than focusing on completing the product. We will continue this work next week and discuss the heart of the Renaissance, the Italian City States.

Have a great weekend.

We will continue this work next week and continue our review of the Canadian Federal Election.
Have a great weekend.

Hello everybody,
Good work this week. We have been continuing to explore some of the background to the Renaissance this week. We have looked at ancient Rome and some aspects of the Middle Ages. We have looked at the political structures that existed in the 1300s and started to examine the black death. You are introduced to the chapter work that will occur during this year. This is an introduction into research, and practices the skills that will be vital in relation to humanities and social studies as you move forward. This is specifically reading, understanding and recording key ideas and information. As you become more experienced we will introduce filtering and interpreting the information taken in. Moving forward we will continue to discuss the Renaissance, organizational strategies and current events. Thank you for your effort. And please remember the presentation this week and how our "attitude" impacts how we react to the world.
Have a good weekend.

Hello
Welcome to Grade 8 Humanities with Mr. Schultz.
This year we will be exploring the idea of worldview. This will be both yours and different people in the world throughout time.
More specifics are highlights in the outline for the course.
Last week we covered some of the basic ideas regarding how we see the world.
You spent some time representing what is important to you both in writing and visually.
We also worked on a world map to help with placing ourselves in the world and to practice planning and execution regarding tasks.
This week we will continue this work and introduce the first topic of the year, The Renaissance.
